DETAILED SYNOPSIS
The story begins with Dan, a 30ish scientist working on patent forms in the kitchen of the small apartment he shares with his life partner, Tom. Tom is a 30ish florist who is also a fastidious homemaker. Dan has just finished creating a genetically engineered plant that can grow cow meat as its fruit. He plans to file the genetic patent and have a press conference to announce his discovery that afternoon. The plant is under a plastic wrap in the kitchen. Tom smells the flower and says it smells like bacon. Dan says the plant will make them rich because farmers can grow meat like they now grow corn and itll be cheaper and easier than raising cattle. Dan goes to file the patent and Tom cleans the apartment. A cable TV news reporter comes early because of a time conflict with the scheduled press conference. He films Tom and the plant and smells the plant. He leaves and Mrs. Weamsley, the owner of the florist shop where Tom works comes to see him. She thinks the plants flower is very marketable except for the bacon smell. After Mrs. Weamsley leaves Tom begins to clean up the apartment. He starts to feel odd. Soon, he is wallowing on the floor in a pile of dirt. That leads to him pouring water all over himself. Then to his horror, he discovers that there are leaves growing all over him. Theyre under his shirt and in his pants. He panics and calls Dan and asks him to return to help him. He then begins eating dirt. Outside he hears a weedwhacker and it enrages him. He runs outside and attacks the lawn maintenance worker.
Zelda is the lawn maintenance worker. Tom beats her with the weedwhacker and ties her to a kitchen chair. By now Tom is covered with leaves. Only his arms and legs and face are not covered. He taunts Zelda at first and then becomes enamored with her because of their shared love of plants. The reporter returns and is thrilled with the possibilities of all the stories going on in the apartment. Dan returns and insists that there will be no TV coverage of anything until he can figure out what went wrong with Tom. But the reporter continues filming until Tom threatens him with the weedwhacker. Then a leaf is discovered on the reporter and he knows hes got the disease and panics. Mrs. Weamsley runs in and shes now covered with leaves.
