This series was begun in 1979 and continued until 1982. Stages is a series of paintings that had a stage-like format. The compositions typically presented figures in a narrow space against a flat wall. The figures are in the midst of some type of drama, leaving the viewer to wonder what happened the moment before and what will happen next. They are similar to the playwriting I was doing at the time, with minimal information and stark sets.

I started this series while I was an undergraduate and developed it further in grad school and two years afterwards. In 1982, I becamne interested in bringing more information into the compositions and that led to the development of the Collage images.
