The Terrorism of Love

A drama (with humor) by Jeff Whipple © 2011

TWO ACTS

ONE BARREN SET WITH ONLY A BOX FOR SEATING

3 FEMALES, 2 MALES

SYNOPSIS

This play examines the emotional terrorism that people in love endure. There is a recurring image of a stereotypical terrorist with a bomb under his overcoat. It has nothing to do with any political statement. The terrorist is a metaphor for the most extreme of career or lifestyle choices. How can anyone feel that intense about anything? Can someone develop that type of emotion and passion or does it happen by random chance?

Angie, a young professional, believes the explosive self-sacrifice of suicide bombers represents the ultimate form of love. Angie aggressively seeks an equivalent passion from her four friends and that causes trouble. With each partner swap comes painful emotions that lead them each to threatening their own comedic version of suicide terrorism.

There are recurring motifs (like the terrorist bomber) that emphasize the interchangeability of love relationships. One motif is a gift-wrapped shoebox, which the characters learn was used in a terrorist bombing at a shopping mall. By the end Angie believes the answer to her dilemma is in a gift-wrapped shoebox.

The first draft of this play had a workshop production in April 2002 as the winner of the 2002 New Plays Competition by the Valencia Character Company at Valencia State College, Orlando, Florida. The above photo is from that show.

This was the 3rd time Jeff has won this competition. He won it for the fourth time in 2009.
