In 2003, LiveArts Peninsula, a St. Petersburg based theatrical production organization, held a statewide playwriting competition. Three playwrights were selected to be commissioned to write one-act plays for "The Floridians", a production of plays and songs about Florida written by Floridians. "The Floridians" also will be presenting a separate evening of songs about Florida by Florida singer songwriters.

"The Cutting Edge of the Amenities" was originally titled "Blood Suckers". It was performed in a staged reading in May and after rewrites, it was performed again in another staged reading in October 2004.
